Penrose-St. Francis Ranks Amongs Nation’s Best Hospitals

HealthGrades Inc. named Penrose-St. Francis to its prestigious “America’s 50 Best Hospitals” list for 2008, and Penrose-St. Francis was actually the only hospital in Colorado named to that list. HealthGrades is a respected Golden, Colo.-based company that provides objective annual ratings of all hospitals in the United States. And the hospital was also selected in both 2006 and 2007 to the “America’s Best Hospitals” list as compiled by U.S. News and World Report.

“These are significant awards related to consistent quality, and they recognize the full spectrum of services we offer,” says Jeff Oram-Smith, chief medical officer for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. ”We are proud of the medical expertise we have available to serve southern Colorado.”

The history of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services dates back more than 100 years, and today the medical leader has two main facilities. They are the long-standing Penrose Hospital on N. Nevada Avenue, and a brand new $207 million, 156-bed St. Francis Medical Center that services northern Colorado Springs. The new St. Francis Medical Center opened in 2008, stands six stories tall and is located on E. Woodmen Road.

“Along with our various clinics that are situated throughout the community, we geographically cover Colorado Springs with every health care service that is available,” Oram-Smith says. “For instance, open heart procedures are provided at our Penrose main facility on North Nevada, while obstetrics and pediatrics are concentrated at our St. Francis north campus. There is no need to leave Colorado Springs for any medical procedure, except for the most serious of burn cases. Those patients are transported up to Denver, but for everything else, just come to Penrose-St. Francis.”

Patients in southern Colorado who frequent Penrose-St. Francis have access to a cancer center, heart institute, birthing center and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit as well as outpatient surgery and behavioral health services.

“We are also the only hospital in southern Colorado that offers the da Vinci surgical system, which is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes a surgical robot,” says Johnny Rea, manager of marketing and public relations for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. “The procedure is primarily used by urology surgeons for prostate patients, and by cardiothoracic surgeons for various cardiac procedures.”
